Diwali, the Festival of Lights Enlightens Us to Welcome Wealth to our Home

 By Santokh Kathy Humphrys

The new grain from the fall harvest is used to create a great feast. Sweets and happy children are everywhere. Lights and candles are placed all over, and fireworks explode to light up the night sky.

This is also the time when people welcome the harvest of wealth into their home. In India, this day is called Diwali which celebrates the triumph of good over evil. Many consider it a favorable time to take great strides in our actions, which we were reluctant to take, though we know it is necessary. Diwali is considered the most auspicious day of the year.  This year, Diwali is Saturday, October 21, 20006.

Preparation for Prosperity in Our Home

Traditionally, inviting wealth to your home is preparing for a Goddess to visit.  She is called Lukshmi, also called Mother Lukshmi, the Goddess of Wealth.  Welcoming Her welcomes wealth into your household.

We can welcome Lukshmi by cleaning our home and celebrating the harvest season with our friends and relatives. The word Diwali means an array of lights, and you can turn on your lights or light candles to guide Lukshmi to your home. This means we have to turn on the light of our Consciousness inside ourselves; Mother Lukshmi is always in our hearts.

Make Wealth a Part of Your Being

With the celebration of Diwali we get into the spirit of wealth and happiness. We have to carry the Light of Diwali in our heart, an act of prayer, invoking the Divine Mother to hold us in the lap of luxury and wealth forever. Our home will be a home of abundance and joy and peace.

Soften Tension in the Neck and Shoulders

If you ever feel like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders, try this easy exercise that is one of my favorites to soften tension in the upper body.  Doing a few repetitions whenever you have a moment at your desk or when you're waiting for a child to tie their shoe is simple and easy.

With this simple shoulder lift you can relax muscles in the upper body. The ancient yogis say it helps to stimulate the thyroid and parathyroid glands in the throat which are responsible for balancing metabolism.

Shrug Off Tension

To begin, take a relaxed, easy breath.  On the next inhale, lift both shoulders towards both ears as the breath comes in. Then as you exhale, lower your shoulders as your breath goes out.  Time your shoulders to move at the speed of your natural breathing. Clear your mind and hear the sound of your breath coming in and out.

This warm-up is a simple way to enjoy the little breaks that life offers. Always use yogic common sense when practicing, and listen to the guidance of your body and your inner wisdom to make adjustments and determine the length of time and frequency of your practice. In a short time you can feel lighter and refreshed.

Lukshmi and Light

This month we talked about the Goddess Lukshmi. Her name contains the Indo-European root luk which is the root of the English word light. This root is the source of many modern day words that have the letter combination lu in them.

Lunar refers to the light of the moon.

Lumen is the scientific term used to describe how bright a light is.

Something that is lucid or lucent is clear and gives off light.

Someone who is re-luc-tant is hesitant. Literally, they are pulling away (re) from the light (luc).

Lucky means fortunate, implying that light is shining down on you.

Illuminated means brightly lit. When you are full of light, you become Enlightened, which is the objective of the spiritual path.

When you become a luminary, you shine brightly upon the path so others can walk along it, so others can be inspired to fill themselves with light.

When lightness is present in your life you feel easy, calm, and playful. You feel wealthy with joy and you are said to be living in lux-ury, living in light.

"When the light of knowledge of the divine, illuminates the body, then goodness dominates."                                                                                      - Sri Krishna, Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 14, Verse 11

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path."                   - Psalm 119:105

"This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all."                    - 1 John 1:5

"With incense, lamps and ghee, I offer this lamp-lit worship service.
I am a sacrifice to the Lord of Lukshmi. Hail to You, Lord, hail to You! Again and again, hail to You, Lord King, Ruler of all!

Sublime is the lamp, and pure is the wick. You are immaculate and pure, O Brilliant Lord of Wealth!"
